Quartz occurs in both a crystalline and polycrystalline variety. Crystalline quartz consists of relatively large crystals that are usually visible to the unaided eye, while polycrystalline quartz is fine-grained and consists of masses of minute crystals.
Polycrystalline quartz: Chalcedony is a general term for translucent fine grained quartz, which is distinguished by a microscopically fibrous banded structure.
Carnelian
Carnelian is a bright orange or reddish Chalcedony coloured by iron oxide. India has produced some of the finest Carnelian since the 4th Century BC but there are many other sources worldwide. Much commercial Carnelian comes from various deposits in Brazil and Uruguay, but it has also been found on beaches on the east coast of England.
