Alexandrite

Befitting of the most important and interesting of the Chrysoberyls, Alexandrite are the most expensive – in fact, they are the most expensive  gemstones of all.  These incredibly rare stones exhibit a change in colour, the ideal being a stone which displays a daylight colour akin to Emerald in daylight, transforming into the colour of a fine Ruby in incandescent light.

The finest Alexandrites were first found near the Takovaya River in the Ural Mountains, Russia, during 1834, and are named after the Russian tsar Alexander II, but much larger specimens can be found as rolled pebbles in the gem gravels of Sri Lanka.
