Carnelian
Carnelian is a red variety of chalcedony which is a form of quartz. As such it is related to agate, onyx and chrysoprase. Click here to view carnelian jewellery at Astley Clarke.
Its red colour is due to the presence of iron impurities in its structure. It can vary from a pale, fleshy pink through a brownish orange colour to a clear red. Its clear translucency makes it popular for use in signet rings and seals.
It was found inlaid on the burial mask of Tutunkhamun, along with lapis lazuli and turquoise.
Carnelian was originally discovered in the deserts of Arabia and Egypt, and has also been found in the Rio Grande area in Brazil, India, China, Colombia, Scotland, West Germany and the USA.
