Chrysoprase

Chrysoprase is a green variety of chalcedony, which is itself a variety of quartz. The word chrysoprase comes from the Greek chrysos meaning 'gold' and prason, meaning 'leek’! Click here to view chrysoprase jewellery at Astley Clarke.

Chrysoprase is sometimes referred to as Australian jade, although in fact it is not jade at all.

Its green colour is due to the presence of nickel impurities. Its colours can range from a greenish yellow to a clear apple green.

It is usually cut en cabochon, or into beads, and is also used for intaglios and cameos.

Chrysoprase is recorded as having been prized in Greek and Roman times, although its ancient source is not known. It has been found at Zabkowice in Silesia, the Ural Mountains in Russia, California, and other parts of the USA.

Due to its relative scarcity and attractive green colour, chrysoprase is one of the most prized varieties of quartz.
