Pyrope Garnet
Pyrope garnet is a member of the garnet family. Garnet is a family of related minerals. Each has a common crystal structure and a similar chemical composition.
Pyrope is the red garnet people probably most commonly think of. Its fiery red, often with a slight brownish hint, was much in demand in the 18th and 19th centuries and was used in much fine jewellery in the Victorian period. Garnets from a particular north-eastern part of the former kingdom of Bohemia were world-famous at that time, particularly in its most popular setting. This put the Bohemian garnet amongst a large number of tiny stones set very close to one another like the seeds of a pomegranate. Today, the small pyrope garnets mined in the Czech Republic are still set close together in the traditional way.
Another, less common type of red garnet is rhodolite garnet.
