Spessartite Garnet

Spessartite is a member of the garnet family. Garnet is a family of related minerals. Each has a common crystal structure and a similar chemical composition. Garnets are commonly thought of as red, but they can in fact be found in many different colours. View all garnet jewellery at Astley Clarke.

Spessartites are radiant orange garnets originally discovered in Germany. They were hardly known until a few years ago, a deposit was discovered at the mouth of the Kunene River, on the border between Namibia and Angola. Before this discovery, spessartites were hardly used in fine jewellery because they were so extremely rare. Since this new find, however, spessartites have become extremely popular, under their more common name ‘mandarin garnet’. Inevitably, the sources in Namibia have run out; recently yet another discovery has been made in Nigeria, however, and the popularity and use of this fiery stone looks set to continue. One of Astley Clarke’s favourite designers, Dara uses hand-cut spessartite garnets in her necklaces, combined with many other colourful semi-precious stones to create stunning designer jewellery.
