Andalusite
This beautiful gemstone was first discovered in Andalucia, Southern Spain, from where it also received its name. Due to the way light is refracted when passing through Andalusite, a single stone often displays many different colours (this is called pleochroic). These can range from greens and browns to an orangey red colour.

As well as its original Andalucia, andalusite can be found in Brazil, Sri Lanka, Siberia and Australia.
Usually, pleochroic (many-coloured) stones such as iolite and tanzanite are cut to minimize the pleochroism and maximize the single best, solid colour. With andalusite, however, cutters try to get a pleasing range of colours, making a cut and refined andalusite a particularly unusual and attractive gem.
