Feldspar

Feldspar is a group of minerals which are important in the formation of numerous types of rocks. There are a few gem varieties of feldspar, including labradorite, which is blue, amazonite, which is green, and the enigmatic moonstone, which can occur in a variety of colours, from blue and grey to pink, green and brown. Feldspar is particularly popular in designer jewellery because of the attractive blue-white sheen, sometimes called adularescence, that its various varieties show, and the ‘glow’ which appears to illuminate the stone from within. This makes the stone appear bluey-white from a certain angle and orangey in others. This is called opalescence, or can sometimes be referred to as iridescence, although strictly speaking iridescence refers to the colour display on the surface of the stone, while opalescence describes the fire-like appearance inside the stone. Examples of this colour-display in nature are found in the sky, which is blue in the daytime and yellowish-red at sunset. Another example can be made by adding a few droplets of milk to a glass of water. The milk looks bluish, but if one looks through the milk at a light source, it looks yellowish-red.
