Tzavorite Garnet
Tzavorite is a member of the garnet family. Garnet is a family of related minerals. Each has a common crystal structure and a similar chemical composition. The luster on its surface can range from being vitreous (glass-like) to resinous (amber-like). Most people think that it is exclusively red. In fact, garnet is available in a far greater variety of colours. Click here to view tzavorite jewellery at Astley Clarke.
Tzavorite is a bright green garnet which was named by Tiffany's in New York, after the place where the discovery was made, near the Tsavo National Park in Kenya. The green of the tzavorite runs from vivid and light to deep and velvety and, like all garnets, it reflects and refracts light particularly well, making it an impressive and brilliant gemstone.
Demantoid garnet is another type of green garnet.
