Carnelian
This striking bright orange or reddish gemstone is most often translucent with a cloudy distribution of colour. A member of the Chalcedony (Quartz) family, carnelian is coloured by iron oxide, with the most favourable pieces possessing a deep red to red-orange hue. Sometimes known as Sard and "pigeon's blood agate" Chalcedony is also referred to by trade names such as, red chalcedony and red agate.

India has produced some of the finest Carnelian since the 4th Century BC but there are many other sources worldwide. Much commercial Carnelian comes from various deposits in Brazil and Uruguay, but it has also been found on beaches on the east coast of England.
