Agate
A translucent cryptocrystalline variety of quartz and a sub variety of chalcedony, agates are identical in chemical structure to jasper, flint, chert, petrified wood, and tiger's-eye. Distinguished by characteristic colours and banding; no gemstone is more creatively striped by nature than agate. Occurring in nodular masses in rocks and volcanic lavas, agate when split open reveals an amazing variety of colours and patterns. This banding distinguishes agate from other types of chalcedony (the compact microcrystalline variety of quartz).
