History of Eternity Rings
Often given to mark key moments in life, an eternity ring is a traditional gift after the birth of a child and for significant wedding anniversaries.
A ring follows the fundamental idea of the eternity of life and love. With no beginning and no end, the endless loop symbolises eternal devotion. It is thought that the ring should be placed on the fourth finger of the left hand as this contains the vena amoris, or 'vein of love,' which connects directly to the heart. Ancient cultures believed that the circle was a symbol of perfection, representing holiness and peace. Cavemen bound themselves to their mates with a cord of woven rushes to symbolise their spirits being as one. Luckily for us, rushes have now been replaced with rocks.
Eternity rings are stone set, often with diamonds. A 'full eternity' ring has an endless setting of stones around the shank, whereas a 'half eternity' only has them halfway round. There are many practical reasons for wearing a half eternity, it being easily adjustable in size, and often more comfortable to wear.
At Astley Clarke, we believe it is not difficult to find reasons to indulge the person you adore. When chosen with care, an eternity ring can be the ultimate expression of enduring love, leaving a lasting impression for you and for future generations.
A properly chosen eternity ring does much to complement an engagement ring, while giving you yet another chance to get it right!
