TALKING COLOUR WITH LAËTITIA ROUGET

 TALKING COLOUR WITH LAËTITIA ROUGET
This week on the AC Journal, we catch up with artist, ceramicist and colour-love, Laëtitia Rouget on her art, inspiration and of course, jewellery…

Tell us about you, your art and what inspires you most?

“I'm Laëtitia Rouget, an artist originally from France but currently living on the beautiful Costa da Caparica, near Lisbon.
My art is a reflection of the vibrant colours, lively culture, and the natural beauty that surrounds me here - embracing the rich artistic traditions of Portugal. Ultimately, I would say that my work celebrates the joie de vivre of my French heritage with an ‘English eccentric’ twist (from my years living in the UK) and a touch of Portuguese sunshine.

When did you start painting and have you always wanted to be an artist?

“My journey as an artist began early on, influenced by my upbringing in a family of porcelain manufacturers in France. However, it was during my time in London, where I studied art at Central Saint Martins, that my passion for painting truly blossomed. Whilst I may not have always known I wanted to be an artist, it became increasingly clear to me as I immersed myself in the creative process and found a unique voice.”

What is your first memory of colour and which are you most attracted to?

“My earliest memory of colour is likely from my childhood, surrounded by the vibrant hues of the south of France, when we were travelling to see my grandparents. However, it's the bold and dynamic colours of Portugal that currently captivate me the most. From the azure blue of the ocean to the bright tones of the beautiful flowers, I find endless inspiration in the natural palette of my environment.”

You choose the rainbow pieces from our new Biography collection. Why were you drawn to these gemstones?

“The rainbow pieces from your new collection instantly caught my eye because they evoke a sense of joy, positivity, and inclusivity. As an artist who values diversity and celebrates the beauty of life in all its colours, I was drawn to these gemstones for their ability to reflect the spectrum of human experience and emotion. They embody the vibrant energy and spirit of my own work, making them a perfect fit for me!”

Let's talk about jewellery - do you have any favourite pieces in your jewellery box?

“I have a few cherished pieces that I've collected along my travels and hold real sentimental value. One of my favourites is a delicate ceramic earring that I crafted myself, adorned with motifs inspired by my other brand Pangea. I also have a few pairs of fun gold earrings from Safsafu with smileys, teeth and hearts, that add a playful touch to my daily routine.”

How do you style them - do you love to layer or prefer a minimal look?

“When it comes to styling jewellery, I believe in embracing individuality and expressing oneself freely. Depending on my mood and the occasion, I enjoy experimenting with different looks, whether it's layering multiple pieces for a bold statement or opting for a minimalistic approach with a single standout accessory. Ultimately, I believe that jewellery should be a reflection of personal style, creativity and your daily mood!”

Where can we see and buy your work?

“My work can be found in various galleries and boutiques both locally in the UK and internationally. Additionally, I have an  online presence through my website and social media channels, which is a great way of reaching new audiences.”
