WHERE: Facebook HQ, Regent’s Place

WHAT: A breakfast to celebrate International Women’s Day and Theirworld’s new campaign, #RewritingTheCode, which aims to raise awareness for girl’s education.

WHO: The event was hosted by Theirworld president Sarah Brown and Nicola Mendelsohn, VP EMEA at Facebook. Guest speakers included comedian Sara Pascoe, writer and presenter Jameela Jamil, model and app developer Lyndsey Scott, archaeologist Ella Al-Shamahi, and there was a special performance by singer Laura Mvula.

On a sunny morning last Friday 4th March Astley Clarke were lucky enough to be guests of Facebook and Theirworld at an inaugural breakfast in celebration of International Women’s Day on Tuesday 8th March.

Having worked closely with Sarah Brown in 2014 to develop our bespoke Theirworld charity bracelet, Astley Clarke is well versed in the fantastic work that is being carried out by the charity to drastically change children’s lives.

This year, ahead of International Women’s Day, Theirworld joined forces with National Geographic and Facebook to launch their new #RewritingTheCode campaign to raise awareness about the prejudice that girls face globally.

Too often it seems, women are crippled by a self-limiting disbelief in themselves and a sense that they need to prove their worth before they can declare their value. Theirworld wants to change that attitude by educating girls and helping to create a future where women are as bold and as confident as their male counterparts.

In support of this purpose, Theirworld have launched an Innovative Code Club for girls in Kenya, Uganda and Senegal to give young women the chance to learn vital technology skills in a nurturing environment designed to empower through creativity and learning. In November 2015, computer kit innovator, Kano, donated three hundred of its award-winning DIY computer and coding kits to the project to enable children to learn, make and play with technology.

From the comedic words of Sara Pascoe to the honest revelations of Lyndsey Scott and the dulcet tones of singer Laura Mvula, one message rang strong – we simply cannot live in a 21st century where women and girls are still being held back.

Every girl around the world should have the same opportunity as every boy to go to school, learn and reach their full potential.

It’s not often you get the opportunity to spend a morning listening to the inspiring stories of such a diverse group of women so empowered in one single cause. To hear the challenges some of them have faced, and the battles they are fighting on behalf of girls all over the world left us not only in awe, but extremely proud to be able to call Theirworld a valued partner of Astley Clarke.
