April’s Birthstone – Diamond

Whilst we are equally obsessed with all manner of gemstones, we have to admit to a spot of jealousy for those born in April. Something tells us that having the valid excuse to demand diamonds on a yearly occasion would just never get old…

Taking its name from the Greek word ‘adamas’ meaning ‘invincible’, diamonds are the hardest known natural substance on earth and their durability is one of the many things that makes them so suitable for engagement rings.

Pure carbon, diamond is one of the oldest minerals in the universe and traces of diamond have in fact been discovered in the hearts of extra-terrestrial meteorites that have fallen to earth.

Traditionally an emblem of fearlessness, it is also symbolic of love and the Greeks believed that diamonds were splinters of stars fallen to earth to endow the wearer with purity, love and joy.

Although the more traditional white, ‘colourless’ stones are the most popular, diamonds are available in a host of vibrant colours including yellow, brown, blue, pink, red, green, orange and black.

Whilst commonly associated as a symbol of marriage proposal and commitment, at Astley Clarke we believe that so beautiful a gemstone deserves no excuse and should be loved and adored by whoever, whenever they so desire. Which happens to be every day in our book…
